China Criticizes U.S. Visa Suspension for International Harvard Students

China has voiced strong opposition to the United States’ decision to suspend entry for international students seeking to study at Harvard University. Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that educational cooperation between China and the U.S. is mutually beneficial and should not be politicized.

“The latest move by the U.S. will only harm its own international credibility and hinder cultural and educational exchanges,” Lin said. “China has always opposed the politicization of educational cooperation. We believe that such actions are detrimental to both countries.”

The Trump administration announced on June 4 that entry into the U.S. would be suspended for foreign nationals aiming to study or participate in exchange programs at Harvard University for an initial six months. The decision has sparked concerns over its impact on international students and academic collaborations.

Lin emphasized that China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its students and scholars overseas. “Chinese students contribute significantly to cultural diversity and academic excellence in U.S. institutions,” the spokesperson added.

The suspension comes amid heightened tensions between China and the U.S., with experts warning that limiting educational exchanges could have long-term negative effects on innovation and mutual understanding.
