China Urges Guatemala to Embrace One-China Principle

In a recent press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called on Guatemala to recognize the one-China principle, emphasizing that such a move aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations. The remarks came after Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo’s visit to Taiwan.

“There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” Lin stated. “The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is a prevailing international consensus that cannot be challenged.”

Lin criticized efforts by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities to engage with so-called “allied countries” for political purposes. He described these attempts as “self-deceptive theatrics” that cannot impede the historical trend toward China’s reunification.

“Currently, 183 countries have established diplomatic relations with China,” Lin noted. “This fully demonstrates that adhering to the one-China principle aligns with international justice, the will of the people, and the trend of the times.”

He urged governments of relevant countries to “have a clear grasp of the overarching trend, heed public sentiment, and make the correct choice as soon as possible.”
