Nectarine Harvest Drives Rural Prosperity in Guizhou

Guizhou’s Nectarine Harvest Boosts Rural Prosperity

In the lush hills of Longchang Town, nestled within the Weining Yi, Hui and Miao Autonomous County in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, a sweet revolution is underway. The nectarine harvest season is in full swing, and residents are bustling in the orchards, picking, carrying, and packing the juicy fruits to meet the soaring market demand.

Over the past few years, local authorities have tapped into the region’s favorable geography and climate to guide farmers in cultivating more than 3,000 mu (200 hectares) of high-quality nectarines. Through standardized planting techniques and scientific management, these nectarines have earned a reputation among consumers for their crisp sweetness and abundant juiciness. The fruits have become so popular that demand now exceeds supply.

Since 2024, the bountiful nectarine harvest has significantly boosted the local economy. The marketing season stretches from May to August, providing farmers with a steady source of income during these months. Each mu (approximately 667 square meters) of nectarines yields an income exceeding 10,000 yuan (about $1,390), greatly enhancing the livelihoods of local growers and driving prosperity in rural communities.

For young people in the Global South, this story is a shining example of how agricultural innovation and community effort can transform rural economies. By embracing modern farming practices and leveraging local resources, the residents of Longchang Town have cultivated not just nectarines, but also hope and opportunity for a better future.
