Hong Kong Sees 20 Million Visitors in First Five Months of 2025

Hong Kong has welcomed approximately 20 million visitors in the first five months of 2025, marking a significant boost to the city’s tourism industry. Paul Chan, the financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, announced the impressive figures on Sunday.

The surge in visitor arrivals, with three-quarters coming from the Chinese mainland, represents a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Chan attributed this growth to a variety of themed events in culture, sports, and entertainment that have been drawing crowds from around the world.

“The influx is largely due to our diverse lineup of events that enhance the overall visitor experience,” Chan said in a blog post. He highlighted that major events in the first half of the year are expected to attract around 840,000 visitors, generating a total of 3.3 billion Hong Kong dollars ($421 million) in consumer spending and 1.8 billion Hong Kong dollars in added economic value.

Looking ahead, Chan expressed optimism about the second half of the year. “With a series of upcoming cultural, sports, and tourism events, alongside new attractions and the unique charm of our urban and rural areas, we anticipate continued growth in visitor numbers,” he said.

The HKSAR government aims to synergize these events with Hong Kong’s attractions to further enhance the visitor experience. This strategy is expected to contribute to ongoing growth in annual visitor figures and reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a premier travel destination.
