Robots Take to the Streets: Chengdu’s Real-World Robot Revolution
Chengdu, the bustling tech hub of southwestern China, has unleashed a new wave of innovation by deploying smart robots across the city. From cheerful companions in schools to automated traffic officers, these robots are being tested in real-world settings, making Chengdu a playground for cutting-edge technology.
The city initiated its first large-scale real-world validation of smart robots, showcasing innovations from ten local enterprises in areas like education, tourism, public security, and traffic management. Organized by the Chengdu Robot Industry Association, this program aims to accelerate industrial development by providing open environments for practical application.
“Chengdu is opening up real-world scenarios to cultivate practical smart robots, forging a highland for innovation in the industry,” said Li Junjie, secretary-general of the Chengdu Robot Industry Association. “We welcome global enterprises to test their robots here and refine services centered around people.”
At Chengdu Paotongshu Primary School, students were greeted by “Xiao Zha,” a playful wheeled-biped robot developed by the Chengdu Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. It delivered morning greetings and safety instructions, bringing smiles to young faces. Meanwhile, TD Tech’s quadruped robot patrolled the school corridors autonomously, enhancing campus security.
In the city’s cultural hotspots, advanced robotics are enhancing the tourist experience. On Jinli Pedestrian Street, INMO Technology’s augmented reality (AR) glasses offered real-time translation for international visitors, breaking down language barriers. Nearby at the famous Wuhou Shrine, a holographic guide engaged tourists with interactive route planning, while AI-powered screens provided multilingual support.
Urban management got a futuristic upgrade with “Ultra Magnus,” a bipedal robot developed by Chengdu APLUX Intelligence Technology Co. Ltd. Standing tall with agile limbs and a metallic finish, it directed traffic like an automated officer on the busy streets. At Tianfu Square, the heart of the city, robot dogs conducted security patrols, keeping an eye on public safety.
This ambitious initiative aligns with Chengdu’s strategy to leverage practical applications for technological advancement. Earlier this year, the city released targeted demands for healthcare robots, and in June, it unveiled police task lists for robotic solutions in patrol and traffic management. These efforts showcase Chengdu’s belief that real-world scenarios are key drivers of innovation.
“By focusing on practical scenarios, Chengdu is accelerating innovation and fostering an environment where technology can truly benefit society,” said Yin Ximing, a researcher and chair professor of public administration at the Beijing Institute of Technology.
Chengdu’s push into robotics is contributing to its thriving artificial intelligence sector, which surpassed 100 billion yuan (about $13.93 billion) in core industry scale in 2024. The city aims to reach 130 billion yuan by 2025, targeting 30 percent annual growth to solidify its position as a national hub for AI and smart robot industries.
With robots roaming schools and streets, Chengdu is not just imagining the future—it’s building it. For the city’s residents, technology is becoming a tangible part of daily life, pointing the way to a smarter, more connected world.
