China’s envoy to the United Nations has urged Syria’s interim authorities to take strong action against terrorism, highlighting the growing threat of extremist groups in the region. During a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative, emphasized the need for Syria to fulfill its counterterrorism obligations.
Recent violent incidents in Syria have raised concerns about the resurgence of terrorist organizations, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), also known as the Turkistan Islamic Party. Fu called on Syria to combat all terrorist groups listed by the Security Council.
He noted that Syria stands at a critical point in achieving political stability and economic recovery, but the situation remains fragile. Reports have emerged of foreign terrorist fighters being integrated into the Syrian national army, which Fu described as a worrying development.
Fu also addressed the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, warning that continued conflict could destabilize Syria and other countries in the Middle East. “If the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate or even spill over, Syria and other countries in the Middle East will inevitably bear the brunt,” he said.
He urged the international community to support Syria in restoring peace and stability, so that the Syrian people can live in safety and dignity.
