China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, met with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Beijing on Friday, expressing China’s readiness to strengthen its traditional friendship with New Zealand.
Zhao, who is the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), emphasized the importance of enhancing mutual understanding and trust between the two nations. He highlighted China’s commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation, openness, and inclusiveness, aiming to enrich the China-New Zealand relationship further.
“Under the strategic guidance of our leaders, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and New Zealand has maintained positive momentum, bringing benefits to our peoples,” Zhao remarked.
He also expressed the NPC’s willingness to deepen friendly exchanges with the New Zealand parliament, enhance collaboration in multilateral mechanisms, and provide legal guarantees for practical cooperation, implementing the consensus reached by both countries’ leaders.
Prime Minister Luxon reaffirmed New Zealand’s firm adherence to the one-China policy. He acknowledged the high-quality development of relations between the two countries and expressed New Zealand’s eagerness to enhance exchanges and cooperation in economic, trade, cultural, and people-to-people fields.
“New Zealand is ready to strengthen exchanges with Chinese legislative bodies and work together to address global challenges,” Luxon said.
