China has voiced strong opposition to what it describes as “provocative actions” by any country in the waters of the Taiwan Strait under the guise of “freedom of navigation.” Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, made the remarks during a regular press briefing on Friday.
“The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Guo emphasized. While acknowledging that China respects the lawful right of nations to navigate the strait, he asserted that China firmly opposes any actions threatening its sovereignty and security in the name of “freedom of navigation.”
The Taiwan Strait, a crucial waterway separating the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan, has been a focal point of regional tensions. Guo’s comments come amid increasing international attention on movements through the strait, which some countries view as international waters.
China’s stance highlights its commitment to safeguarding its territorial claims and responding to what it perceives as external interference. “We urge relevant countries to refrain from provocation and contribute positively to peace and stability in the region,” Guo added.
