Chinese Military Monitors UK Warship’s Passage Through Taiwan Strait

The Chinese military announced that it tracked and monitored a UK naval vessel, HMS Spey, as it sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command Navy maintained vigilance throughout the vessel’s passage.

Senior Colonel Liu Runke, spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theater Command Navy, stated on Friday that the PLA handled the situation effectively. “Such action deliberately undermines the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait,” Liu said.

The UK claims that the passage of HMS Spey complies with international law. However, the Chinese military views the move as a provocation. “The PLA remains on high vigilance at all times to resolutely counter all threats and provocations and to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Liu added.

The Taiwan Strait, a key waterway separating Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, is often a point of tension in international relations. The PLA’s monitoring of foreign naval vessels underscores the strategic importance of the region.
