China is calling for international efforts to ease rising tensions between Israel and Iran, urging an immediate ceasefire and a return to dialogue.
At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the urgency of de-escalation. “If the conflict escalates further, not only will both sides suffer greater losses, but regional countries will also be severely affected,” he warned.
Fu strongly condemned Israel’s recent attacks on Iran, stating that such actions violate international law, undermine Iran’s sovereignty and security, and threaten regional stability. He called on the international community to promote talks between the two nations to prevent the situation from “sliding into an unknown abyss.”
“The parties to the conflict, Israel in particular, should cease fire as soon as possible to prevent the situation from escalating and to avoid any spillover of the fighting,” Fu urged.
He stressed the importance of protecting civilians, insisting that the indiscriminate use of force is unacceptable. Fu called on all parties to avoid harming innocent people, refrain from attacking civilian facilities, and facilitate the safe evacuation of third-country nationals.
The envoy expressed concern that the ongoing conflict has disrupted negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue. He highlighted that Israeli attacks on multiple Iranian nuclear facilities set a dangerous precedent with potentially catastrophic consequences. Fu urged all relevant parties to return to the path of political dialogue and negotiation.
Welcoming recent talks in Geneva between Iran and European counterparts, Fu also expressed support for a joint statement issued by foreign ministers of 21 Arab and Islamic countries, which called for a ceasefire, the resumption of talks on the Iranian nuclear issue, and the maintenance of lasting peace in the region.
“The international community, especially major countries with special influence on the parties to the conflict, should make efforts to cool down the situation, rather than doing the opposite,” he said.
Fu called on the UN Security Council to play a greater role in maintaining international peace and security. “China supports the council in taking necessary actions in a timely fashion,” he added.
He concluded by stating that China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with all relevant parties, build synergy, uphold justice, and play a constructive role in restoring peace in the Middle East.
