New Film ‘Story of Cotton Field’ Brings Xinjiang’s Journey to the Big Screen

An inspiring new film titled Story of Cotton Field is set to hit theaters across China on June 21. Adapted from an award-winning novel, the movie highlights decades of dedication and perseverance from individuals who contributed to the development of the Xinjiang region.

Director Zhang Zhong expressed his pride at the film’s premiere earlier this week, stating, “It is a great honor to direct a movie of such historical and cultural significance.” The filming spanned 70 days and numerous locations, including Qitai, Mulei, Aksu in Xinjiang, and other provinces like Shanghai and Fujian. The project has been hailed as a benchmark for interregional cultural collaboration in Chinese cinema.

The narrative follows multiple generations as they work tirelessly to advance cotton cultivation in Xinjiang. Veteran actor Li Xuejian delivers a powerful performance as an experienced aid worker who has come to see Xinjiang as his second home. The film captures the spirit of those who rooted themselves in the region, opening up new frontiers and paving the way for future generations.

From the pioneering cadres of the past to the new wave of young people continuing the mission under China’s rural revitalization strategy, Story of Cotton Field portrays a sweeping tale of sacrifice and national solidarity. The film is also scheduled for a special screening alongside the 37th China Golden Rooster Awards ceremony in 2024, garnering anticipation from audiences and critics alike.
