Beijing, China — The streets of Beijing came alive this weekend as hundreds gathered to celebrate International Olympic Day with a series of vibrant fitness events. Against the backdrop of the iconic Beijing National Stadium, affectionately known as the “Bird’s Nest,” participants of all ages took part in a spirited 4.5-kilometer race.
The race route wove between the renowned “Dual Olympic” venues, including the National Aquatics Center, offering runners a unique opportunity to experience the legacy of both the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics. The finish line brought participants to the steps of the Beijing Olympic Museum, symbolizing a full-circle journey through China’s rich Olympic history.
Wang Shuchuan, a former Chinese triathlete, was among the early arrivals. With a camera in hand, he prepared to document the day’s events for his vlog. “I continued my passion for sports through marathons after retiring from professional athletics,” Wang shared. “By sharing my experiences online, I hope to inspire more people to embrace an active lifestyle and join our growing community of runners.”
The event also attracted international participants like Paola Marras from Italy, who has made Beijing her home. “The sports atmosphere here is incredible,” she said with a smile. “I was captivated by the 2022 Winter Olympics, and events like the China Open are personal favorites. Participating in today’s race was a fantastic way to connect with others who share my love for sports.”
Adding to the excitement, Olympic champions Ma Long and Zhang Yufei sent their well-wishes to the crowd. “Engaging in physical exercise is essential for our health,” said Ma Long, a table tennis legend with six Olympic gold medals. “It’s inspiring to see so many people enthusiastic about sports. I encourage everyone to find an activity they love and pursue it with passion and dedication.”
Swimming star Zhang Yufei reflected on her Olympic journey. “At the Rio Games in 2016, I didn’t fully grasp the Olympics’ significance,” she admitted. “But after winning gold in Tokyo, I felt the true power of teamwork and perseverance. Even when the results don’t always match our efforts, the Olympic Spirit drives us forward. I’m motivated to chase new goals and continue growing.”
Established in 1948, International Olympic Day is celebrated annually on June 23 to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. The day promotes fitness, well-being, culture, and education, encouraging people worldwide to get active and embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
As Beijing’s fitness events show, the Olympic Spirit is alive and well, inspiring a new generation to strive for greatness both on and off the field.
