China and Singapore Vow Closer Ties in High-Level Beijing Meeting

Beijing, China — Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Monday, as both leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation and deepen ties between their countries.

During the meeting in Beijing, Li highlighted the longstanding friendship between China and Singapore, emphasizing that the bilateral relationship has grown stronger since the establishment of diplomatic relations 35 years ago. “China is willing to work with Singapore to uphold mutual respect and trust, equality, and mutual benefits,” Li said.

The two leaders discussed expanding collaboration in areas such as the digital economy, green economy, artificial intelligence, smart cities, and ocean energy. They also expressed interest in enhancing exchanges in education, culture, tourism, and media.

Li called for increased two-way trade and investment, as well as cooperation in third-party markets. He underscored China’s commitment to working with Singapore and other ASEAN member states to promote regional economic integration, including the timely implementation of the upgraded China-ASEAN Free Trade Area pact and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Prime Minister Wong expressed Singapore’s eagerness to maintain close high-level exchanges with China. “Singapore looks forward to deepening friendship and mutual trust, and promoting flagship cooperation projects like the Suzhou Industrial Park,” Wong said.

Wong also voiced confidence in the Chinese economy and highlighted Singapore’s willingness to explore new areas of cooperation, including biomedicine. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding free trade and the multilateral trading system through enhanced communication and collaboration on regional and multilateral platforms.

The meeting marks a continued effort by both nations to strengthen their partnership and collaborate on initiatives that benefit both countries and the wider region.
