Chinese and Singaporean Foreign Ministers Strengthen Bilateral Ties in Beijing Meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a significant step in deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the meeting, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the recent fruitful discussions between President Xi Jinping and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He expressed China’s appreciation for Singapore’s reaffirmation of the one-China policy and its unequivocal opposition to “Taiwan independence.”

“China is willing to take the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore as an opportunity to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and the outcomes of the visit,” Wang Yi stated.

Vivian Balakrishnan emphasized Singapore’s commitment to working closely with China, embracing a forward-looking and strategic vision. He noted the opportunities presented by emerging technologies and expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade, investment, and connectivity.

“Singapore will, together with other ASEAN countries and China, adhere to openness and inclusiveness and defend multilateralism,” Balakrishnan added.
