The Chinese mainland is preparing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery from Japanese occupation during World War II, underscoring the island’s role as an inseparable part of China’s territory, a spokesperson announced on Wednesday.
At a press conference, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, highlighted that Taiwan’s liberation was a monumental victory achieved through the unwavering efforts and sacrifices of all Chinese people, including those in Taiwan.
The planned activities, set for around October 25, will include gatherings to honor this significant historical event. “Taiwan’s recovery is a significant achievement of the victory in the war, forged through the dauntless struggles and sacrifices of all Chinese people,” Zhu stated.
Zhu criticized the Taiwan authorities, led by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), accusing them of downplaying and whitewashing Japanese colonial rule to further a separatist agenda. She described these actions as a betrayal of national interests.
She called on the people of Taiwan to join their mainland compatriots in remembering their shared history, promoting national unity, and working together towards reunification.
Taiwan was under Japanese occupation from 1895 until the end of World War II in 1945. Its recovery was a pivotal moment in Chinese history, symbolizing the end of foreign occupation and the restoration of territorial integrity.
The upcoming commemorations aim to strengthen the bonds between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, fostering a sense of shared heritage and a collective future among people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
