Every winter, the snow-covered slopes of Jiangjun Hill Ski Resort in Altay City, Xinjiang, come alive with the swoosh of skis and the laughter of thrill-seekers. But among the crowd of skiers and snowboarders, one figure stands out—known affectionately as “Grandpa Bear.”
Chen Xuedong, hailing from Beijing, transforms into this beloved character by donning his signature bear suit before hitting the slopes. Gliding effortlessly through the pristine snow, he captures the hearts of onlookers and fellow skiers alike. His whimsical attire isn’t just for show; it’s a symbol of his enduring love for the sport and his desire to bring joy to others.
“I started wearing the bear suit to make people smile,” Chen shares with a warm grin. “Skiing is about freedom and happiness, and I wanted to spread that feeling.”
Beyond his playful exterior, Chen is a seasoned skier with a deep passion for the craft. He’s taken his enthusiasm a step further by crafting his own custom skis, tailoring them to suit his unique style and the challenging terrains of Jiangjun Hill.
Young skiers at the resort often flock to him, drawn by his fearless moves and friendly demeanor. “Grandpa Bear taught me that age doesn’t matter when it comes to doing what you love,” says Li Mei, a 19-year-old skiing enthusiast. “He’s an inspiration to all of us on the mountain.”
The camaraderie Chen fosters extends beyond the slopes. He’s known to share tips, encourage beginners, and even organize impromptu ski races. His presence has become a cherished part of the winter season in Altay City.
“The thrill of skiing isn’t just in the speed or the tricks,” Chen explains. “It’s in the connections you make and the joy you share with others.”
As the snow blankets Xinjiang each year, one can be sure that “Grandpa Bear” will return, bringing with him not just his skis and bear suit, but a spirit of adventure and a reminder that passion knows no age limits.
