The defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states gathered on Thursday in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China’s Shandong Province. The high-level meeting aimed to bolster cooperation and reinforce regional peace and stability amid a complex global landscape.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun addressed the assembly, emphasizing the crucial role of the SCO as an “anchor of stability” in today’s world. “China is willing to work with all SCO member states to adhere to the organization’s original aspirations, carry forward the ‘Shanghai Spirit,’ and firmly safeguard international fairness and justice,” Dong stated.
He called for joint efforts to tackle security challenges and promote steady, far-reaching defense and security cooperation among member nations. The “Shanghai Spirit,” characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of common development, was highlighted as the cornerstone for collaboration.
Representatives from all participating countries concurred on the importance of enhancing strategic communication and practical cooperation. They affirmed their commitment to jointly maintaining regional peace and stability, recognizing that unity and cooperation are vital in addressing the pressing issues facing the region.
The SCO, founded in 2001, is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It focuses on strengthening mutual trust and neighborliness among member states, promoting effective cooperation in politics, trade, economy, and culture.
