June 29 marks the International Day of the Tropics, established by the United Nations in 2016 to celebrate the incredible ecological diversity of tropical regions. Covering about 40 percent of the world’s landmass, the tropics are home to nearly 80 percent of global biodiversity. These regions boast 95 percent of the world’s mangrove resources and 99 percent of mangrove-endemic species.
Despite their immense value, tropical ecosystems like forests and coral reefs are facing severe threats. Deforestation, ocean acidification, and climate change are jeopardizing these natural treasures, putting countless species at risk and impacting the livelihoods of millions who depend on them.
Nations around the world are rallying to protect these vital ecosystems. In Hainan, China, significant efforts are underway to restore mangroves and safeguard endangered ancient tree populations. The Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park serves as a sanctuary for rare species, highlighting the importance of preserving natural habitats.
This photo collection focuses on two themes—"Tropical Ecological Barriers" and "Tropical Climate Resilience"—showcasing conservation efforts across the globe. Highlights include underwater nurseries in the Caribbean and preservation initiatives in the Congo Basin rainforest. These images not only reveal the beauty and diversity of the tropics but also emphasize the urgent need for sustainable development practices.
As the next generation, teenagers and young adults have a crucial role to play in safeguarding these ecosystems for the future. By raising awareness, supporting conservation efforts, and advocating for sustainable policies, we can ensure that the ecological treasures of the tropics are protected for generations to come.
