Record Surge: Over 2.85 Million HK Vehicles Cross Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Northbound

GUANGDONG-HONG KONG-MACAO GREATER BAY AREA — As of 9 a.m. Monday, more than 2.85 million northbound trips have been made by single-plated vehicles from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) via the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Single-plated vehicles are those registered only in the Hong Kong SAR.

In a bid to enhance cross-border connectivity for work and leisure, the “northbound travel for Hong Kong vehicles” scheme was officially launched in July 2022. This initiative marks a significant step toward stronger integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

From July 1, 2022, to June 30 this year, over 108,000 vehicles and 129,000 drivers completed border inspection registrations under the new policy.

According to the bridge’s border inspection station, more than 3.27 million passenger vehicles have passed through the port since the beginning of the year—a year-on-year increase of approximately 30 percent. On weekends and holidays, the average daily traffic reaches around 21,000 vehicles.

Hong Kong’s single-plated vehicles account for over 40 percent of the total crossings, making them the most common type at the port.

Before the policy’s implementation, the average daily number of vehicles passing through the port was about 7,000. This number has now reached 18,000, an increase of more than 150 percent compared to the same period in 2022, according to a border inspection station official.
