Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with European Council President Charles Michel in Brussels on Wednesday, urging closer cooperation between China and the European Union (EU) to serve as pillars of stability in an increasingly uncertain world.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized China’s view of Europe as a key player in a multipolar world. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining consistent and stable policies toward the EU.
“No matter the challenges Europe faces, China firmly supports European integration and welcomes the EU’s efforts to enhance strategic autonomy and play a more active role on the global stage,” Wang said.
He highlighted the current global landscape marked by turbulence and transformation, where unilateralism and bullying undermine the international order. Wang stressed that China and the EU, as major global powers and economic leaders, have a responsibility to act as anchors of stability.
“If China and the EU continue to uphold dialogue and cooperation, bloc confrontation will not emerge. Our commitment to openness and mutual benefit ensures that globalization continues. By jointly upholding multilateralism, we can prevent the world from descending into chaos,” he added.
Wang called for both sides to strengthen solidarity and enhance coordination. He underscored the importance of respecting each other’s core interests, building mutual trust, and achieving shared success for the benefit of the world.
Marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, President Michel noted that this milestone offers a valuable opportunity to further develop bilateral ties. He emphasized that both the EU and China support multilateralism and share the responsibility to address key global issues.
“In a world facing rising instability, our cooperation can inject confidence and positive expectations into the international community,” Michel said.
Acknowledging existing differences, he reiterated the EU’s commitment to mutual respect and understanding with China. Michel expressed the EU’s willingness to work together to tackle global challenges and ensure the success of the next China-EU leaders’ meeting. He also reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering commitment to the one-China policy.
The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis. Wang Yi reiterated that China determines its position based on the merits of the matter and remains committed to promoting peace and dialogue. “China will continue to play a constructive role in seeking a political resolution to the conflict,” he stated.
