Beijing, China — China has urged the United States to stop pushing forward a Taiwan-related bill that supports the Taiwan region’s inclusion in the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The call came from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a regular press conference on Thursday.
Mao emphasized that there is only one China in the world, and the Taiwan region is an inseparable part of China’s territory. “The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China,” she stated.
“Taiwan does not have any ground, reason, or right to join the United Nations or any other international organization whose membership is confined to sovereign states,” Mao added, reiterating China’s longstanding position on the issue.
The U.S. House of Representatives recently adopted the “Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act,” which requires the U.S. government to support the Taiwan region in joining the IMF. China views this move as a violation of the One-China principle and interference in its internal affairs.
Mao called on the United States to adhere to the One-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. She urged the U.S. to “observe international law and basic norms of international relations” and to “stop sending wrong signals to the separatist forces for ‘Taiwan independence.'”
The spokesperson’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions between China and the United States over the status of Taiwan. China’s government has consistently opposed any actions that it perceives as supporting Taiwan’s independence or international recognition.
