Chinas 1st Green Methanol Injection Completed on Diesel fueled Vessel

China Completes First Green Methanol Fueling on Diesel Vessel

China has achieved a significant milestone in green shipping by completing its first green methanol fueling of a conventional diesel-powered vessel. On Wednesday, the ship was refueled at Yangpu Port in Hainan Province with green methanol produced from urban waste.

The 200 tonnes of green methanol were produced by China BlueChemical Ltd. (China BlueChem), a subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corporation. This eco-friendly fuel is generated using biogas from the fermentation of urban kitchen waste, animal manure, and other organic materials.

By utilizing this green methanol, the vessel is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 325 tonnes—the equivalent of planting over 19,000 trees. This marks a substantial step forward in China’s efforts to transition its shipping industry from traditional fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources.

“This is a crucial step in advancing green energy within the shipping sector,” said Wu Hongsheng, head of China BlueChem’s green methanol working group. “We are proud to contribute to emissions reduction and promote environmental sustainability.”

This initiative aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and underscores China’s commitment to green innovation and sustainable development in the maritime industry.
