A Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy fleet led by the aircraft carrier Shandong arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday morning, marking the start of a five-day visit to the region.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government hosted a grand welcome ceremony to greet the fleet. “On behalf of the HKSAR government and residents, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the arrival of the naval fleet,” said HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee during his speech at the event.
From Friday to Sunday, the fleet will open its doors to local residents, offering interactive activities such as training demonstrations and national defense knowledge lectures. These events aim to provide locals with a direct and in-depth understanding of China’s advancements in national defense and military development in the new era, according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.
This visit by the Shandong, China’s first domestically-built aircraft carrier, presents a unique opportunity for residents to explore the nation’s growing naval capabilities. The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and represents a significant milestone in China’s naval history.
Local residents expressed excitement about the chance to visit the fleet. “I’m thrilled to see the Shandong up close,” said a university student in Hong Kong. “It’s amazing to witness the progress our country has made in developing such advanced naval vessels.”
The Shandong‘s visit underscores the strengthening ties between the PLA Navy and Hong Kong, promoting mutual understanding and national pride among residents.
