For over a decade, Xu Lu has been charting a unique course across the Taiwan Strait. Unlike most sailors, he makes these voyages aboard replicas of traditional treasure ships that he builds himself.
In 2025, on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, Xu Lu returned to Yuegang Port with a new mission: to reconstruct one of Admiral Zheng He’s famed treasure ships from the Ming Dynasty.
“Rebuilding Zheng He’s ship is about more than just replicating a vessel,” Xu Lu explained. “It’s about preserving a piece of maritime history and inspiring future generations to appreciate our rich cultural heritage.”
Zheng He, a legendary admiral, led expansive voyages across Asia and Africa in the 15th century, fostering trade and cultural exchange. His treasure ships were marvels of their time, symbolizing innovation and exploration.
Xu Lu’s dedication to traditional shipbuilding techniques not only honors the past but also connects communities across the strait. His voyages have become a symbol of shared history and cultural bonds.
“Every plank and sail tells a story,” Xu Lu said. “By sailing these waters, we keep those stories alive.”
The project has garnered attention from historians and young enthusiasts alike, eager to witness the revival of a legendary vessel. As Xu Lu sets to work in Yuegang Port, he invites others to join in celebrating a legacy that transcends time.
