On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul convened the eighth round of the China-Germany Strategic Dialogue on Diplomacy and Security in Berlin. This significant meeting aimed to bolster mutual trust and deepen bilateral cooperation between the two economic powerhouses.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the important international responsibilities that China and Germany share as the world’s second and third-largest economies. He highlighted the need for both nations to work together amidst rising protectionism and unilateralism.
“China and Germany should strengthen strategic communication and collaboration to bring more certainty to the world through the stability of our ties,” Wang stated. He called for advocating true multilateralism and safeguarding the international system with the United Nations at its core.
Wang also urged both countries to uphold mutual respect and seek common ground while setting aside differences. He expressed appreciation for the new German government’s positive attitude in developing relations with China and called on Germany to adhere to the one-China principle.
Johann Wadephul acknowledged the global significance of close cooperation between Germany and China, especially amid current global challenges. “We can handle our differences with mutual respect and a constructive attitude,” Wadephul said, expressing Germany’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation.
The German government firmly adheres to the one-China policy, Wadephul added.
During the dialogue, both sides exchanged views on pressing international issues, including the Ukraine crisis, the Iranian nuclear issue, and the situation in the Middle East. They agreed to maintain close communication and coordination to contribute to promoting ceasefires and peacefully resolving disputes.
