China’s Tang Dynasty Architecture Dazzles at Osaka Expo 2025

Visitors at the Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, are experiencing a journey back in time to the grandeur of ancient Chinese architecture. On Saturday, the China Pavilion unveiled the Japanese edition of a groundbreaking virtual exhibition titled “Tang Architecture: Building Timeless Glory.”

The Tang Dynasty (618-907) is renowned as a peak of Chinese civilization, particularly in the realm of architectural technology and artistry. This exhibition brings to life the elegance of wooden structures from that era, highlighting their profound impact on architectural history both in China and around the world.

Employing cutting-edge technologies like AI animation, 3D modeling, and immersive interactive experiences, the exhibition reconstructs iconic Tang structures. Visitors can explore the East Hall of Foguang Temple, one of China’s most treasured edifices, and the majestic Daming Palace, the imperial complex symbolizing the dynasty’s prosperity. The urban planning of Chang’an City, once the world’s largest metropolis, is also showcased in stunning detail.

On-site, a meticulously restored physical model of the East Hall of Foguang Temple is enhanced with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. This allows visitors to delve into intricate interior details that are rarely seen, offering a unique blend of physical and digital exploration.

The event attracted representatives from various fields, including experts in culture and architecture from both China and Japan. They participated in in-depth discussions on topics such as Sino-Japanese cultural cooperation and exchange. Attendees noted that the exhibition not only opens a new window for international audiences to appreciate Chinese aesthetics but also bridges the past and present, fostering fresh perspectives for mutual learning between civilizations.
