The 11th Nishan Forum on World Civilizations is shining a spotlight on traditional Confucianism, a cornerstone of Chinese civilization. Held in Nishan, located in east China’s Shandong Province, the forum celebrates the birthplace of Confucius, one of the most influential philosophers in ancient China.
Confucius (551-479 BC) was a renowned educator who taught over 3,000 students, 70 of whom were considered exceptional. His disciples compiled his teachings into “The Analects of Confucius,” preserving his wisdom for generations to come.
Five Key Concepts of Confucianism
Confucianism revolves around five key concepts: benevolence (ren), righteousness (yi), propriety (li), wisdom (zhi), and trustworthiness (xin).
Benevolence emphasizes mutual help, love, and respect among people. A famous Confucian saying advises, “One should not impose on others what one does not desire for oneself,” encouraging empathy and understanding.
Righteousness guides individuals to consider morality when faced with personal gain. Confucius taught that one should discern whether pursuing gain aligns with ethical principles.
Propriety serves as the foundation for proper human relations and ethical judgment, helping people differentiate right from wrong.
Wisdom enables individuals to navigate complexities without confusion, acting in harmony with moral standards.
Trustworthiness highlights the importance of honesty and fidelity, particularly in friendships. Confucius questioned, “What good is a person if they act without good faith?”
Global Influence of Confucianism
Confucianism’s impact extends beyond China, influencing cultures worldwide. In South Korea, Confucian principles have shaped society for over 500 years, with many citizens still embracing these values in daily life.
Since 2004, around 500 Confucius Institutes have been established in approximately 160 countries and regions, promoting Chinese language and culture through international collaboration.
Modern Relevance
Experts believe Confucian ideas offer valuable insights into today’s global challenges. Concepts like harmony between humans and nature and the vision of a world for the common good remain pertinent.
Andrea Balbo, a professor at the University of Turin in Italy, finds the discussions on social order and harmony in Confucianism particularly fascinating. He believes these ideas are essential for fostering a more peaceful world.
At the 10th Nishan Forum, Jonathan Flowers, an assistant professor at California State University, Northridge, highlighted the role of Confucianism in shaping ethical individuals and assessing societal health through ritual conduct.
Chhem Kieth Rethy, a professor at CamTech University in Cambodia, emphasized the importance of benevolence in his life and work. He suggested that embracing Confucian values could help resolve conflicts by encouraging dialogue and understanding.
“If you want to live in a harmonious world, you need to apply his wise principles,” Chhem added, underscoring the enduring relevance of Confucius’s teachings.
