In a significant move, China has decided to target medical devices imported from the European Union in its government procurement, following the EU’s restrictions on Chinese companies. The Ministry of Commerce announced on Sunday that these measures aim to safeguard national interests and ensure fair competition.
A spokesperson from the ministry explained that while the restrictions will apply to EU-imported medical devices in government procurement, European-funded companies producing goods within the Chinese mainland won’t be affected. “China has no choice but to implement reciprocal measures against the European Union,” the spokesperson stated during a daily briefing.
This development comes after the European Commission introduced measures on June 20, 2025, limiting Chinese companies’ participation in public procurement of medical devices. China views this action as erecting barriers against its companies.
Despite China’s repeated expressions of willingness to resolve differences through dialogue and mutual agreements, the EU proceeded with its restrictive policies. “Unfortunately, the EU has ignored China’s goodwill and sincerity, insisting on new protectionist barriers,” the spokesperson added.
