Beijing — China has responded to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threats to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries aligning with BRICS policies, emphasizing that the BRICS mechanism fosters cooperation and isn’t aimed at any nation.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, addressed the remarks during a regular press briefing on Monday. "The BRICS mechanism is an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries," Mao stated. "It advocates openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation, does not engage in bloc confrontation, and is not targeted at any country."
Trump had accused BRICS — a bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — of supporting "anti-American" policies. In response, he threatened to levy extra tariffs on countries that align with the group’s initiatives.
Mao reiterated China’s stance on trade, saying, "There are no winners in trade wars or tariff wars, and protectionism offers no path forward." She emphasized the importance of collaboration over confrontation, especially amid global economic challenges.
The BRICS nations have been working together to strengthen economic ties and promote development among emerging economies. Recent discussions have focused on enhancing cooperation in areas like trade, technology, and sustainable development.
China’s response highlights its commitment to multilateralism and opposition to unilateral tariff measures that could hinder global economic growth.
