Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a powerful message at the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday, urging member nations to unite in reforming global governance to ensure peace, equality, and shared prosperity.
“Transformations unseen in a century are accelerating in the world,” Li said, highlighting the geopolitical conflicts, economic frictions, and challenges to international order that the global community faces today.
Addressing leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Li emphasized the growing necessity for an inclusive and equitable global governance system. He called on BRICS countries to stand together as pioneers in promoting reforms that reflect the interests of all nations, especially those in the Global South.
A Vision for Collaboration
Li reiterated China’s commitment to the vision of “extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit,” first proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2015. He stressed that amidst rising differences and disputes, it’s crucial to foster equality and respect through open dialogue.
“Power politics and bullying are never the right way to solve problems,” he said. “We need to look for the best answer that serves the interests of all through friendly consultation conducted on the basis of equality.”
Focusing on Development
Highlighting the importance of economic growth, Li urged BRICS nations to harness their collective strengths in markets, resources, and industries. He announced China’s plans to establish the China-BRICS New Quality Productive Forces Research Center and the BRICS New Industry Golden Egret Excellence Scholarships. These initiatives aim to foster innovation and train talent in fields like industry and telecommunications.
Promoting Cultural Exchange
Li also called for greater inclusiveness and mutual learning among civilizations. “Dialogue between civilizations can build bridges for peace and friendship and inspire wisdom for common development,” he noted.
A Call to Action
Concluding his speech, the Chinese premier expressed readiness to work closely with BRICS partners. “China is ready to work with fellow BRICS members to make global governance more just, equitable, efficient, and well-ordered, and build a better world together,” he affirmed.
