The 11th Nishan Forum on World Civilization is bringing together global thinkers to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding among civilizations. Held annually in Qufu, Shandong Province—the birthplace of the renowned Chinese philosopher Confucius—the forum serves as a bridge for discussing key global issues like culture, modernization, and global governance.
This year’s theme, “Beauty in Diversity: Nurturing Understanding Among Civilizations for Global Modernization,” resonates strongly in today’s world of increasing geopolitical tensions. The forum seeks to answer a critical question: How can civilizations with diverse traditions and histories collaborate toward a shared global vision?
Finding Common Ground
Xiang Shuchen, a professor of philosophy at Xidian University, emphasizes the forum’s role in promoting dialogue between different cultures. “The Nishan Forum focuses on fostering conversations about Confucian thought, traditional Chinese culture, and global ethical values,” he explains. “In times of growing geopolitical tensions and cultural divides, it’s essential to find common ground based on shared human values.”
The term “Nishan” refers to Nishan Mountain, a culturally significant site where, according to tradition, Confucius’s parents prayed before his birth. This connection underscores the forum’s deep roots in promoting wisdom and understanding.
The Relevance of Confucianism
Edwin Etieyibo, a philosophy professor at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, highlights the global applicability of Confucian values. “Confucianism places a high value on harmony and respectful relationships, promoting peace to varying degrees,” he notes. “These principles resonate not just in Africa but across the modern world.”
Etieyibo points out that Africa faces numerous conflicts, and embracing concepts like harmony and togetherness can contribute to resolving them. He draws parallels between Confucianism and African philosophies such as Ubuntu, which emphasize humanity and unity.
Celebrating Beauty in Diversity
The theme of this year’s forum highlights the importance of appreciating different cultures. “People often overlook the significance of diversity,” says Etieyibo. “The forum reminds us that we’re better off embracing multiple ways of doing things, promoting respectful engagement between civilizations.”
Xiang adds that learning from others is a core value rooted in Confucian thought. Quoting Confucius, he says, “When I walk with two others, I am bound to learn from them: the good points of one and the bad points of the other. I correct myself.” This attitude encourages self-improvement and mutual respect on a global scale.
Shared Values for Global Harmony
Both professors agree that shared values like the importance of family play a crucial role in uniting different cultures. “Family is significant in both Chinese and African societies,” says Etieyibo. “This sense of extended family influences how institutions are built and how we relate to others in society.”
As the world grapples with fragmentation and conflict, the Nishan Forum offers a platform to rediscover common values and build a more harmonious global community. By celebrating diversity and fostering understanding, the forum aims to contribute to global modernization rooted in shared human values.
