Seventeen people are missing after devastating mudslides struck near Gyirong port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, the border crossing between China and Nepal, local authorities reported on Tuesday.
According to officials in Xizang, eleven individuals are missing on the Chinese mainland side, while six Chinese construction workers are unaccounted for on the Nepalese side of the border.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas as efforts intensify to locate the missing individuals. The heavy rains that triggered the mudslides have caused significant disruptions in the region, impacting transportation and communication networks.
Gyirong port is a crucial trading hub between the Chinese mainland and Nepal, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the border. The recent natural disaster has raised concerns about the safety and infrastructure in the mountainous areas prone to such incidents.
Local authorities are urging residents and travelers to exercise caution as weather conditions remain unpredictable. Further updates will be provided as rescue operations continue.
