A Chinese-developed meteorological disaster early warning project has been awarded the prestigious 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize. The innovative project, titled “Rapid, Accurate and Secure Production, Dissemination, and Communication of Early Warning for Meteorological Disaster,” was developed by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).
The announcement was made at the WSIS Forum on Monday, recognizing the project’s excellence in the category of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications in E-environment. The project stood out among 973 submissions, with only 19 winners selected for this year’s WSIS Prizes.
In his acceptance speech, CAICT President Yu Xiaohui highlighted China’s active role in responding to climate change and implementing the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative. “It’s crucial that all relevant groups are informed promptly when disasters occur,” Yu emphasized, underscoring the importance of effective communication in mitigating the impacts of meteorological disasters.
The WSIS Prizes are authoritative global awards that recognize outstanding projects advancing sustainable development through the use of ICTs. This accolade not only spotlights China’s commitment to climate action but also its innovations in the ICT sector.
This year’s WSIS Forum, co-hosted by the International Telecommunication Union and the Swiss Confederation, serves as a platform for government and industry representatives from over 150 countries. Participants are exploring ways to address the digital divide, tackle global technological challenges, and discuss emerging technology trends that could shape the future.
The success of CAICT’s project reflects a significant step forward in utilizing technology to safeguard communities against the increasing threats posed by climate change. As nations worldwide grapple with environmental challenges, such innovations are vital for building resilience and promoting sustainable development.
