China and Japan Aim to Build Stronger Ties for a New Era

China and Japan are taking strides towards a brighter future, aiming to strengthen their relationship and build constructive ties suitable for a new era. On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya to discuss advancing their strategic partnership.

Wang Yi highlighted the deep significance of China and Japan’s relationship, noting that as important neighbors, their cooperation extends beyond just bilateral matters. “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War,” Wang said. “It’s an important opportunity to face history and move forward into the future.”

The Chinese Foreign Minister expressed hope that Japan would learn profound lessons from history and continue on a path of peaceful development. On this foundation, he believes that both nations can bring new momentum for development in the region and the world.

Wang Yi also emphasized the importance of the four political documents between China and Japan, especially regarding the Taiwan question. He urged Japan to strictly adhere to these agreements to safeguard the political foundation of their bilateral relations.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya acknowledged the positive progress in Japan-China relations, emphasizing the need to strengthen communication, reduce differences, and expand cooperation. “It’s essential for our countries to promote the stable development of the Japan-China strategic relationship of mutual benefit,” Iwaya said.

Regarding the Taiwan question, Iwaya stated that Japan maintains its position as outlined in the 1972 joint statement between Japan and China. He also noted the significance of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, expressing Japan’s commitment to addressing history earnestly, looking to the future, and following the path of peaceful development.

“Japan looks forward to working with China to strengthen exchanges at all levels and promote cooperation in various fields,” Iwaya added.
