China Vows to Strengthen Friendship with Cambodia Amid Global Uncertainties
In the midst of a turbulent international landscape, China has reaffirmed its commitment to being a steadfast friend and partner to Cambodia. On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed this sentiment during a meeting with Prak Sokhonn, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the importance of both nations working together to combat cross-border crimes, including online gambling, telecom fraud, counterfeit production, and smuggling. He emphasized that eradicating these threats is crucial for safeguarding the safety and well-being of the people in both countries.
Addressing economic concerns, Wang Yi expressed hope that China and Cambodia would adopt robust measures to strengthen their economic ties. He noted that the U.S. imposition of tariffs on Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries could hinder their legitimate development rights. Wang Yi expressed confidence that Southeast Asian countries have the capability to navigate complex situations, uphold their principles, and safeguard their interests.
The discussions also touched upon regional stability, particularly the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Wang Yi acknowledged that while Cambodia and Thailand may have differing positions, both sides are willing to manage the situation and ease tensions. He stated that as close neighbors, Cambodia and Thailand are expected to uphold a spirit of harmony and goodwill to resolve issues amicably. China, he added, will maintain an impartial and fair stance and play a constructive role as needed.
Prak Sokhonn expressed deep appreciation for China’s decision to grant Cambodia zero-tariff treatment on all tariff lines, describing it as a gesture of true friendship that provides significant assistance to his country. He contrasted this with the recent U.S. tariff increase of 36 percent on Cambodian goods. While noting Cambodia’s willingness to negotiate with the U.S. to resolve differences, Prak Sokhonn affirmed that Cambodia would not abandon its principles or compromise the interests of third parties.
The meeting between the foreign ministers underscores the strong ties between China and Cambodia, as both nations seek to strengthen their partnership in the face of global challenges.
