The Chinese mainland has voiced concerns over the use of tariffs as a means of coercion in international relations. On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that tariffs should not be employed to bully other countries or interfere in their internal affairs.
Mao’s remarks came during a regular press briefing in response to the United States’ recent announcement of imposing tariffs of up to 50% on Brazilian goods starting August 1. The U.S. has accused Brazil of “unfair” trade practices and demanded a halt to what it calls domestic political “persecution.”
“Sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs are important principles of the Charter of the United Nations and basic norms governing international relations,” Mao emphasized. She urged nations to uphold these principles to maintain global harmony.
The tension highlights the complexities of international trade and the importance of respecting each nation’s sovereignty. As global economies become increasingly interconnected, actions taken by one country can have far-reaching impacts on others.
