Jakarta, Indonesia — At the recent East Asia Summit (EAS) held in Jakarta, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for stronger cooperation among East Asian countries to promote regional stability and prosperity. Representing China, Wang Yi proposed three key suggestions aimed at enhancing collaboration in the region.
Return to Dialogue
Wang Yi emphasized the importance of returning to constructive dialogue to build strategic mutual trust. He noted that in recent years, certain external countries have used the summit to highlight differences and interfere in the internal affairs of other nations. “We hope all parties can respect each other, communicate with goodwill, and focus on enhancing understanding and cooperation,” Wang Yi stated. He expressed China’s support for issuing a commemorative declaration on the 20th anniversary of the summit to guide its future development.
Return to Development
Highlighting the need for pragmatic cooperation, Wang Yi called on East Asian countries to work together to improve the lives of people in the region. He cautioned against unilateralism and protectionism, labeling them as short-sighted and dangerous. “Expanding the cooperation pie and sharing the benefits of development is the best choice for all parties,” he said. China is ready to collaborate with all nations to implement the East Asia Summit Action Plan and stimulate regional growth.
Return to Openness
Wang Yi expressed support for the ASEAN-led regional cooperation framework and the multilateral trading system. He advocated for creating a high-level regional free trade network and promoting regional integration. “We oppose introducing a Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation into this region, as well as establishing closed and exclusive ‘small circles,'” he emphasized.
Addressing Regional Issues
On the Taiwan question, Wang Yi stressed that the root cause of tensions in the Taiwan Strait is the separatist actions advocating “Taiwan independence” and external support for such movements. He underscored the necessity of resolutely curbing these forces to maintain peace and stability. “Safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is a sacred mission for every country,” Wang Yi stated, expressing hope that all nations will continue to uphold the one-China principle and support China’s efforts toward complete national reunification.
Wang Yi also reiterated China’s firm stance on the South China Sea issue, calling for mutual respect and cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the region.
The East Asia Summit, marking its 20th anniversary, serves as a significant platform for dialogue and cooperation among East Asian countries, aiming to promote peace, development, and prosperity in the region.
