Former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has expressed deep admiration for China’s remarkable ability to merge rapid technological advancement with the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.
In an exclusive interview, Leterme reflected on his nearly 50 visits to the Chinese mainland over the past two decades. He noted how China has transformed from a technological follower to a global innovator, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology into everyday life.
“I think there’s this capacity for the Chinese society to combine social and economic progress on the one hand and, on the other hand, to keep its identity,” he observed. “It’s not easy.”
Leterme highlighted China’s unique approach to modernization, one that doesn’t forsake traditional arts and cultural practices amid the surge of digitalization. Unlike some Western nations grappling with the disruptive effects of technology on tradition, China, he believes, has found an equilibrium.
“China has the capacity to strike a balance between amazing social and economic development and massive access to new technologies, but on the other hand, keep in place its own identity,” he said.
His insights offer a perspective on how societies can embrace innovation while maintaining a connection to their roots—a topic increasingly relevant in today’s rapidly changing world.
