Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Beijing on Sunday, reaffirming their nations’ commitment to strengthen strategic cooperation amid global uncertainties.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, welcomed Lavrov’s visit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers Council meeting. He described China-Russia relations as “the most stable, mature, and strategically significant major-country relationship in the world today.”
The two diplomats emphasized the importance of viewing bilateral cooperation from a historical and long-term perspective. They agreed to maintain close communication to implement the consensus reached by their heads of state. Wang highlighted the priority of preparing for upcoming high-level exchanges and deepening comprehensive strategic coordination.
Wang Yi underscored the SCO’s role as a vital platform for promoting multilateralism and enhancing cooperation among nations in the Global South. As the current rotating chair of the SCO, China expressed readiness to work with Russia and other member states to ensure the success of the upcoming Tianjin Summit, setting future strategic directions and energizing cooperation in key sectors.
Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to advancing cooperation under the strategic guidance of the two presidents. He pledged full support for China’s SCO chairmanship and emphasized the importance of coordination within the SCO framework to achieve a successful summit.
The ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Ukraine crisis, and the Iranian nuclear issue.
