London, UK — Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang urged for enhanced cooperation between China and the UK in finance and education during the Sino-UK Financial Education Symposium held on Thursday. The event took place in London, bringing together key figures from both nations.
Ambassador Zheng highlighted the increasing instability and uncertainty in the global economy. He emphasized the importance of unity and multilateralism in addressing challenges that affect international trade and economic growth. “The world economy faces significant challenges, and it is crucial for nations to work together to uphold the multilateral trading system,” he said.
He also pointed out the resilience of the Chinese economy amid a complex external environment. “China remains committed to high-quality development. Our economy has shown strong resilience and positive momentum,” Ambassador Zheng noted.
The ambassador underscored the immense potential for Sino-UK collaboration. With bilateral trade exceeding 110 billion pounds and two-way investment stocks over 130 billion pounds, there is a solid foundation for further cooperation. He highlighted progress in green finance, mentioning China’s issuance of 6 billion yuan in green sovereign bonds on the London Stock Exchange in April.
On education, Ambassador Zheng celebrated the strong ties between the two countries. “There are over 200,000 Chinese students in the UK, making China the largest source of international students here,” he said. He welcomed more British students to participate in exchanges and study tours in China, noting the recent exchange program involving nearly 1,200 UK secondary school students.
Other notable speakers included Li Min, Secretary General of the Western Returned Scholars Association, Michael Lawrence, CEO of Asia House, and Sir David Quarry, Board Member of Asia House and Group Head of Public Affairs at HSBC. Representatives from financial, educational, and think tank sectors participated in discussions on strengthening bilateral relations.
Ambassador Zheng concluded by calling for mutual respect, openness, and a focus on cooperation. “By working together, we can create a better environment for wider cooperation in finance, education, and other fields,” he stated, expressing hope for greater benefits for the people of both countries.
