In 2015, Zhao Nan, an aspiring young journalist, embarked on an unforgettable journey as an intern at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Looking back now, the memories of those days still fill her with a deep sense of nostalgia and inspiration.
“Every day at the UN was a new adventure,” Zhao recalls. “I met people from all corners of the world, each with unique backgrounds and beliefs. Yet, despite our differences, we treated each other with kindness and respect.”
One of the most impactful moments for Zhao was standing before the iconic statue known as “Non-Violence,” or “The Knotted Gun.” Located in front of the UN headquarters, the sculpture symbolizes a global rejection of violence and a collective call for peace. “It reminded me of the power we have when we come together to promote harmony,” she says.
During her internship, Zhao witnessed firsthand the UN’s efforts to foster peace, security, and cooperation among nations. She was particularly inspired by her homeland’s contributions within the UN framework. “China continues to play a significant role in promoting global peace and development,” Zhao notes. “It’s steadfast in advocating for a community with a shared future for humanity.”
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations—a milestone celebrating eight decades dedicated to uniting people and nations. For Zhao, this anniversary is a reminder of the ongoing journey toward a more peaceful and tolerant world. “I hope the coming years bring even more understanding and unity among peoples,” she says.
Zhao Nan’s experiences at the UN have left a lasting impression, fueling her passion for international journalism and cross-cultural communication. Her story is a testament to the profound impact that global institutions can have on individuals and the importance of embracing diversity in our interconnected world.
