Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of fostering good-neighborliness and friendship between China and India during a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Beijing on Monday.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called on both nations to uphold mutual trust and cooperation, aiming for mutual success. He expressed China’s readiness to work with India to expand exchanges and strengthen coordination in multilateral arenas such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
“China and India should find a way for mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development, and win-win cooperation,” Wang Yi said. He highlighted the shared support for multilateralism and emphasized the need to safeguard the multilateral trading system, global industrial and supply chains’ stability, and promote an international environment of openness and cooperation.
Wang Yi also called for joint efforts to protect the common interests of the Global South and to promote regional peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stressed that China and India are development partners rather than competitors. He emphasized India’s willingness to view bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, stating that both sides should work together to build positive momentum.
“We should prevent differences from escalating into disputes and ensure that competition does not lead to conflict,” Jaishankar said. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to strategic autonomy and an independent foreign policy, expressing readiness to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China in multilateral arenas and jointly promote the establishment of a multipolar world.
This meeting underscores the efforts by both nations to enhance their relationship and contribute to global stability and prosperity.
