First Ever Sighting of Rare Oriental Darter in Hainan’s Wetlands

A rare Oriental darter, a near-threatened waterbird, has been spotted for the first time in Hainan’s Changjiang Haiwei National Wetland Park, according to the provincial bird records agency.

The bird was observed perched atop a tree canopy, displaying its distinctive features: a brown head and neck, a white stripe running from its chin down to its chest, and darker feathers covering the rest of its body. This sighting marks a significant moment for local conservationists and bird enthusiasts alike.

The Oriental darter, resembling a cormorant with its long neck and streamlined body, is primarily a fish hunter found near freshwater lakes and rivers. It uses its sharp beak to spear fish with remarkable precision. Listed as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the bird has become extremely rare in the Chinese mainland.

“This unexpected sighting could indicate a positive shift in our wetland ecosystems,” said a spokesperson from the bird records agency. “It highlights the importance of continued conservation efforts in preserving the natural habitats of these species.”

Hainan’s wetlands are crucial breeding grounds for numerous bird species. The appearance of the Oriental darter adds to the province’s rich biodiversity and underscores the global significance of protecting such environments.

Conservationists hope that this discovery will boost eco-tourism and raise awareness about endangered species in the region. “We encourage the public to appreciate these birds responsibly and support initiatives that safeguard their habitats,” the spokesperson added.
