Baldursson on Confucianism a New Dimension to His Worldview Video Poster

How Confucianism Transformed an Icelandic Scholar’s Perspective

Icelandic sinologist Ragnar Baldursson has opened up about the profound impact that Confucianism has had on his life, adding a significant new dimension to his worldview.

In an exclusive interview, Baldursson reflected on his journey studying and translating Confucian classics. While he remains deeply connected to his Icelandic roots and Christian upbringing, he acknowledges that embracing Confucian philosophy has enabled him to see the world through a richer, more diverse lens.

“Confucianism has allowed me to appreciate multiple perspectives simultaneously,” Baldursson shared. “It has taught me the value of understanding and respecting different viewpoints.”

Central to his transformation is the Confucian principle of He Wei Gui, which translates to “harmony is precious.” This concept resonates deeply with Baldursson’s approach to life and intercultural understanding.

“By acknowledging and comprehending different, even contrasting ideas, we can foster cooperation and find common ground,” he explained. “Harmony doesn’t mean everyone is the same; it means we can coexist with our differences.”

Baldursson’s insights highlight the timeless relevance of Confucianism in today’s globalized world, encouraging young people to explore philosophies beyond their own cultures to build a more harmonious society.
