By the start of the fourth quarter, after Miwa Kuribayashi’s easy layup, Japan had stretched their lead to a commanding 22 points at 81-59.
However, the Philippines refused to back down. Showing incredible resilience, they outscored Japan 25-8 in the final quarter. Jack Animam dominated the paint, racking up a game-high 24 points. Vanessa De Jesus nailed a clutch three-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer, cutting the deficit to just three points.
