American ‘Lao Tan’ Wheels Change Through China

BEIJING, China — Joshua, once an American student at Peking University, has transformed into “Lao Tan,” a beloved figure navigating the narrow alleys of Beijing’s hutongs. Fluent in Mandarin with a flawless Beijing accent, Lao Tan’s journey is anything but ordinary.

In 2017, inspired by friendships with individuals living with spinal injuries, Lao Tan launched the “Krankin’ thru China” campaign. His mission: to build bridges between people with disabilities and the wider world through the power of handcycles. This initiative not only provides mobility but also fosters community and understanding.

Lao Tan has established experience centers where people can connect and share their experiences. His dedication culminated in an epic 5,800-kilometer journey across China, now legendary among those who know his story.

From a student of Chinese to a catalyst for change, Lao Tan embodies how one person’s passion can make a significant difference. His story is an inspiring testament to the impact of cultural exchange and the spirit of public service.
