The Chinese mainland has reiterated its firm opposition to any official interactions between the United States and Taiwan region, a spokesperson announced on Wednesday.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, expressed strong disapproval of Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te’s so-called “transit” through the U.S., stating that the mainland rejects such actions under any pretext or in any form.
“We urge the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués,” Chen emphasized. “The U.S. should handle the Taiwan question with utmost caution and refrain from sending any wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”
Chen highlighted that the one-China principle is a universal consensus in the international community and a fundamental norm in international relations. “It is upheld and respected by the vast majority of countries around the world, representing the greater moral imperative, the will of the people, and the prevailing global trend,” he added.
The spokesperson also expressed hopes that relevant Latin American and Caribbean countries will handle Taiwan-related matters prudently and join the broader framework of China-Latin America cooperation as soon as possible.
