Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed deep condolences over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at the age of 82 in London on July 13.
In a heartfelt message to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Xi praised Buhari as an important leader who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s development and made significant contributions to national unity and progress.
“His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari was highly respected in the international community,” Xi stated. “He steadfastly upheld friendship with China and actively promoted Nigeria-China friendship and China-Africa cooperation.”
Xi emphasized that Buhari’s passing is a tremendous loss to the Nigerian people and that China has lost a dear friend. He extended sincere sympathy to Buhari’s family, as well as to the Nigerian government and people.
The Chinese president reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership with Nigeria. “China highly values its relations with Nigeria and is willing to work with the Nigerian side to consistently move forward our bilateral partnership,” Xi said.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, during which he focused on combating corruption, enhancing national security, and boosting the economy. His leadership played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s contemporary history.
His dedication to fostering closer ties with China led to increased collaboration in areas such as infrastructure development, trade, and cultural exchange, significantly benefiting both nations.
