Shimmering under the sun, Qinghai Lake in northwest China’s Qinghai Province is more than just a picturesque destination—it’s a testament to China’s eco-revolution. With azure waves and soaring brown-headed gulls, the lake embodies the region’s commitment to an ecology-first strategy that’s pioneering green growth.
Restoring Biodiversity at Qinghai Lake
Once threatened by overfishing and environmental degradation, the unique naked carp species of Qinghai Lake has made a remarkable comeback. “The naked carp makes up over 90% of the lake’s fish population and is crucial for maintaining the ecosystem,” said Wang Shuning from the Qinghai Lake scenic area’s protection administration.
Since banning naked carp fishing in 2001, the biomass of the species has increased nearly 46-fold. Similarly, the endangered Przewalski’s gazelle population has grown from fewer than 300 to about 3,400, showcasing successful conservation efforts by the government and local communities.
Villagers Turn Guardians of Nature
Local residents like Dorje Tsomo have become ecological rangers, patrolling the lake with cameras and manuals to monitor wildlife. “We document environmental changes and ensure injured birds receive care,” she shared. “Together, we protect Qinghai Lake, our shared home.”
Many herders are also embracing new roles as photographers and eco-educators, diversifying their incomes while contributing to conservation. “Qinghai Lake’s ecological conservation is truly impressive,” noted Japanese journalist Furuta Natsuya. “I witnessed a genuine model of human-nature coexistence.”
Eco-Tourism Boosts Local Prosperity
The Kanbula UNESCO Global Geopark, with its striking red Danxia landforms and emerald lakes, is attracting tourists worldwide. Villagers like Jorgyi have turned to eco-tourism, running homestays and agritourism businesses. “Last year, we earned over 70,000 yuan, and this year looks even more promising,” she said.
Dekyi Village now receives over 200,000 visitors annually, generating significant income for the community. “I’m interested in rural revitalization,” said Furuta. “Visiting Qinghai provided insight into poverty alleviation and the outcomes of government initiatives.”
Green Energy Powers Sustainable Growth
In Gonghe County, one of the world’s largest photovoltaic parks is harmonizing energy development with environmental protection. The innovative model combines solar power generation with grass cultivation and sheep grazing beneath the panels. “This has restored vegetation and boosted incomes,” explained Wang Anwei, director of the Hainan Prefecture’s energy bureau.
Herder Zhao Guofu has seen his income double since grazing his sheep at the solar farm. “My flock has grown to about 800 sheep,” he said. By the end of 2023, the area aims to generate significant clean energy, showcasing a balance between development and conservation.
“It’s interesting to see how Qinghai maintains this balance,” remarked Spanish journalist Alvaro Alfaro Ruiz-Alberdi. “People in Spain are paying attention to the ecological impact of large solar power stations.”

Qinghai’s ecology-first strategy not only protects the environment but also enriches the lives of its people. Through biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism, and renewable energy, the province is setting an example for sustainable development that resonates globally.
