Travel between China and Malaysia just got easier than ever.
A mutual visa exemption agreement between China and Malaysia officially came into effect on Thursday, allowing citizens of both countries to visit each other without a visa for up to 30 days per trip. The agreement follows over a year of trial implementation that began on December 1, 2023.
During the trial period, Malaysia experienced a significant boost in tourism. In 2024, an impressive 3.8 million Chinese tourists visited Malaysia, making China the largest source of tourists to Malaysia outside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
The new policy permits travelers to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This change is expected to further enhance tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
China has been actively expanding its visa-free travel agreements and has now established mutual visa exemptions with 158 countries. In the first half of 2025, China welcomed 13.64 million foreign nationals without a visa, representing 71.2 percent of all foreign arrivals—a 53.9-percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the National Immigration Administration.
For young adventurers and globetrotters, this development opens up exciting opportunities to explore new cultures and destinations. Whether you’re dreaming of the vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, or rich histories that China and Malaysia offer, now is the perfect time to start planning your trip.
